Do Students Think That Men are More Competent to Have Political Functions Than Women?

The representation of women in politics is a topic we regularly encounter in the public sphere. We asked students in our survey to what extent they agree with the statement that “Men are more competent to have leading political functions than women”. The responses from 22,877 students show that the opinion on this problem varies depending on gender. The graph below shows that more than half of men “rather” or “strongly” agree with the statement (53 %), and even 15 % of women agree that men are more predisposed to leading political functions. Almost three-quarters of female students don’t agree with the statement, but only 30 % of male students do. The difference between the share of female and male students who chose “I don’t know” is only three percentage points. Among students who don’t identify as either men or women, there is a comparable share of those who agree with the statement and those who don’t.
