Project Overview

A school is not just an institution where you acquire knowledge but more importantly it shapes our relations and attitudes to various topics and helps us find our place in society.

This project aims at adolescents - high school students - and tries to map the fundamental aspects of this formative and transformative period, when young people become competent adults and citizens of this country.

Because youth matter

Even though hardly anyone doubts the importance of high schools in young people's lives, there hasn’t been any research to date in the Czech Republic to map in detail the effect of the school environment on adolescents' attitudes. With the financial support of the Czech Science Foundation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and the Czech School Inspection we are conducting an extensive panel survey, the first of this kind and scope.

The first data collection was successfully carried out in the autumn of 2023 with more than 24,000 first-year high school students. The data collection will be repeated annually until 2026. We aim to capture potential changes and effects of the school environment throughout the whole period of high-school studies.

We invited all types of high schools from all regions of the Czech Republic to participate in the survey, however, the final number of participating schools is 249.

The main themes of the project:

  • Cognitive knowledge
  • Well-being
  • Sense of belonging with school
  • Relationships with schoolmates and teachers
  • Attitude towards otherness
  • Family background

The participation of as many schools as possible is necessary for the success of the project and the most objective results.
